Sand Island Petroglyphs

This panel was found in a somewhat remote space between Mexican Hat and Moab. The markings are between 300 and 3000 years old, reflecting drawing from the Anasazi from the early Basketmaker period through the Pueblo III period and records from Ute and Navajo people.

This panel is secured behind a link fence to help deter vandalism. To prevent irresponsible tourism, there are signs onsite that ask that visitors share the beauty and heritage of the panel, but to withhold the coordinates of the site.

Moab, Utah is incredible. It hosts multiple state and national parks and is considered a dark sky refuge for those seeking a beautiful visual of the Milky Way, an experience our ancestors had before the advent of electricity.

Canyonlands is vast, measuring nearly 338,000 acres. The park is divided into three districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the rivers.

The Needles district (featured above) is a favorite for hikers, offering 60 miles of interconnecting trails.

It's also the least visited park in Moab. We spent the day in Needles and encounter fewer than (8) other visitors throughout the entire day.

If you are a nature traveler that likes to avoid crowds, Canyonlands is amazing.

Yep, this side quest is a real place. It's about 280 million years old and the caprock measures 60 feet by around 12 feet. The whole rock formation is around 300 feet above the surrounding land.

Forrest Gump Point, located in Mexican Hat, Utah is the iconic spot where Forrest decided it was time to go home.

We, on the other hand, decided not to go home. We were actually just getting started. And so far, Utah was spectacular!

It is a romantic legend dating back over 100 years to a woman in Hungary who lost her true love during World War I. In her grief, she placed locks on bridges at various places where she and the love of her life had spent time. It was a way of symbolizing that her love for him was unbreakable.

People would place locks all over the bridges in Helen, GA to commemorate their love but the locks were causing damage, so Helen created an art installation in the center of town for people to use instead.

Locks are available at nearby shops so that visitors can participate. ❤️✨❤️✨

There are over 26,000 archeological sites in Big Bend National Park. There are only two sites that are for public viewing that include pictographs and petroglyphs from its previous inhabitants. This site, located at the Chimney trail, plays host to drawings that were made by the Apache, Comanche, and other unknown settlers that pre-date these groups by over 1000 years.

LeConte Lodge, the highest guest lodge in the eastern United States! Nestled on an open glade just below the summit of Mt. LeConte, this hidden gem sits at a elevation of about 6400 feet. But here's the catch - you can only access it by hiking!

Once you reach this rustic paradise, prepare to disconnect from the world. Guests stay in charming hand-built log cabins. Don't expect electricity, but cozy up with propane heat and the warm glow of kerosene lanterns. It's a pretty incredible experience if you're looking for something authentic but to secure your spot, you'll have to try your luck in a lottery.

Arch Rock is the first stop on the Alum Cave trail. It is a 3-mile round trip hike to reach this landmark.

This is the easy leg of the journey. It offers a scenic path through the forest, alongside an absolutely beautiful creek.

For those with physical limitations or if you're short on time, Arch Rock is a great place to turn around. After this point the trail becomes more demanding.

The photos indicate the approach to Arch Rock, the ascent through it, and the backwards glance as we continued moving forward.

*Note the steep incline. There are cables installed to balance you when it's slippery
